Segal brand locks

Postby ElbowMacaroni » 6 Sep 2009 4:05

I saw some of these on fleabay, and haven't heard of this brand. I was wondering if it'd be worth picking a couple up to play with, or if it would be like the disappointment of the fortress padlock where you could break wind next to it and you find that it's popped right open.

Thanks!

segal used to be a good name in locks, once associated with the fox police lock, in new york.
I didn't know they were still in business, perhaps you should google the company and see if its still around, I haven't seen one of them in years,

Interesting, I'll look into that then. I'd just never heard of them so it seemed the appropriate place to ask opinions. Which I suppose I got a good one :) Well I guess I'll google them to see if they're still around to try to gather info on them, and maybe grab one from ebay to play with too. I just didn't want to score one off ebay and be disappointed if it was too easy. It's not like the ones I saw were expensive or anything, it's just the time waiting for it to arrive and building excitement only to be let down I was concerned about. It'd be cool if it was a challenge. I wonder how long it'll be before SWMBO starts getting impatient with my new hobby? LOL!

Segal is once again in business under parent company Prime-Line Products.

Fun Fact: for a while they were owned by ASSA Abloy Group until sold to Prime-Line Products.

one of my favorite 'old time US brands', just like Taylor, Lockwood, etc

Well, I have one on the way now. We'll see how tough it is for me... if medeco is making them it might be out of my league for a while.

It's just a pin tumbler lock, nothing difficult about it. In fact, they're actually very fun to pick. I also find Medeco's website to be very out of date. I wonder if they still manufacture this item or if this was when ASSA Abloy Group owned this interest.

anyone else care to look into it?

Ok, cool. That's good to know, I have hope then. Regardless it will still be fun.

Thanks!

Almost a month late in the reply, but this might still be of interest to some...

The information I can find is a bit sketchy, but from what I can tell the brand has always been Segal, but corporate history goes something like this:

    - 1910: Segalock was formed by Samuel Segal;
    - 1940's: Segalock rebranded as the Segal Lock Company;
    - 1950's: Segal Lock Company was purchased by the New England Lock Company;
    - 1998: The New England Lock Company was purchased by ASSA Abloy AB;
    - 1998: ASSA Abloy renamed the New England Lock division to NEL Corporation;
    - 2008: The Segal Lock division of NEL was purchased by Prime-Line Products.

I think the Medeco website is somewhat out-of-date: Prime-Line only bought the Segal division last year, and they currently own the segallock.com website. Despite all of the hand-overs and buy-outs, though, I believe that the Segal brand has operated continuously since 1910.
