HELP! think ive totally screwed up my lock

Postby patrickyuis » 20 Sep 2009 11:25

OK basically i had left my key inside the room and accidentally locked myself out, which has happened before and the locksmith that came to do it for me the previous time showed me how to do it if it happened again. well i tried and didnt succeed :(

basically he said all i needed to do was to drill [snip --Legion303]

when i came to do it today it didnt work out like that at all, i managed to do the first bit and drill the hole through but when i did it seems as though the cylinder and the outer bit (have no idea what its called) have welded themselves together from the heat. and i accidentally drilled through the keyhole area too. i know i know im stupid and careless but if anybody can give me any advice as to a solution i would be very grateful.

this is the picture of what ive actually managed to do:

[snip --Legion303]

and this is the picture on what type of lock it is, on the box it says "Yale Traditional Door lock, 60mm with Brass Cylinder":

Seems that you don't know how to operate an electric drill with appropriate drill bit.

The instructions you are asking for are destructive entry and thus advanced information. The lock is also in use, so here we have two good reasons to not give any information regarding this matter and the thread will be locked I'm sure.

Call a locksmith.

Jeez, what'd you go at that thing with? 3/8"? Has the cylinder always been off centered like that or did that start to happen when you were drilling? That's a rim cylinder which typically has a plate that holds the cylinder in place and centers the cylinder in relation to the rest of the lock. I can't help but wonder how the heck it's that off centered.

If I were you I'd call a professional because you've screwed something up that's incredibly simple. I'd hate to see you also damage the lock, the door, or worse yet - yourself.

Does not make sense and if you really forgot the keys

Call a professional because at this point, they are the only ones that will be able to help you since you've done some major damage to this lock.

You people giving this guy grief on having a drill but not having the keys are making yourselves look uneducated. These rim latches automatically lock when they're closed. It's basically a storeroom function in another incarnation - always unlocked from inside, always locked from outside - requires key to enter.

Just because he's locked out from that particular room doesn't mean he's locked out from the rest of his house - which, get this, could quite possibly contain a drill, a camera, a computer, etc.

If that's the case, why did he have to drill the lock?
he should it go around any other room or window connect it to that room and unlock it uh :)

Not if it's a storage closet or something similar that only has one entrance. Again, humble yourselves people - it's an entirely realistic situation and he shouldn't be faulted for getting locked out - if it hasn't ever happened to you then it's only a matter of when, not if.

Well, think what you like: you're welcome to your opinion. Not knowing anything else about this new member of our site, I do find it strange that he has access to the Internet, a digital camera and power tools... all while being "locked out".

You've been here a few weeks now: certainly long enough to see that we get a lot of questions from people who are up to no good. It's possible (probably even likely) that nothing strange is going on here. Locksmithing is a profession for you, and things like drilling and picking "in use" locks are just part of the job: I completely understand that. But, as a community of folks trying to promote "locksport" as a legitimate hobby, we simply don't have the luxury on this site of guessing and hoping for the best in cases like this.

Just my $0.02.

Have you ever heard of closets, storage spaces, or other rooms that only have one entrance? They do exist and people can and do lock them up. It is not implausible that he is locked out of this particular room but not the rest of his house. Not every house is on one key or keyway and not everyone is willing to change that.

you seem to enjoy playing devil's advocate to every n00b who has some suspicious issue going on in their initial posts. Why is it you feel the need to defend everyone who we question? just to be the one guy who has to be "that" guy? We speak from experience, so don't go out of your way to second guess us, by always defending the OPs as if they're your best friend that were attacking or something along those lines.

sheesh..

I guess its because I don't immediately write someone's situation off without the facts. What's that saying about assuming?

yeah, it makes lots of a$$es, but you seem to act like you know all the facts as if you're there in person. Frankly, you're not, and you dont know all the facts either, just as I don't know them. This is the internet, I wouldn't be so trusting. I guess you just haven't been burned enough times on the net or in real life to be as skeptical as some of us are. And I think that I, personally, have gone out on a limb to help some unknown new user on more than one occasion. But then again this is a site about lockpicking for fun, not a 24-7 tech support line for people with a lockout or damaged lock. That's the only place I really draw the line and will get snippy with a poster and shut them down, that and photos or a post of a lock obviously in use. I'm all for spread of knowledge and helping your fellow man, but I don't visit a Chevy Nova racing fan site to ask how to change the headlight out on my 1994 Ford Escort. (wow that's an obscure and over complicated analogy, can we use that here? I hope so..) =)

Yeah, or he coulda' cut through the drywall... repairing drywall is a very simple task. Easy to make it look like it was never cut if you take your time... after all if it's your place, that wouldn't really matter and still would have been cheaper than destroying the lock and now needing a locksmith!
