Old Lock Info.

Postby kenworth350 » 4 Oct 2009 21:45

I just bought this lock this past week and i was wondering if someone knew anything about it, here are some pictures. I have never seen one like this. No markings on the lock but a #1 is stamped on top of shackle. Please let me know Thankyou

Interesting. Do you need the key in the lock to close the shackle, or does it automatically lock itself?

Other than the weird locking mechanism, it appears to be a simple warded lock.

Never seen it before. It looks like a good find though.

Just by looking at it I imagine it would use 4 large disks, with wards in between each. And it looks as though is uses 2 different angles. Makes me think of some kind of primitive Abloy lock, instead of lining up the notch for a side bar it would line up the notches for the shackle to come out.

Probably not difficult to pick, but definitely worth collecting.

I believe this is what is commonly known as a "Scandi" (Scandinavian) style padlock. Seems like the key would move levers out of the way of the shackle, allowing it to be pulled up and out. Almost reminds me of a cheap Master warded padlock mechanism as well.

oh edit button how I miss thee.. (btw.. they should give users with 1000+ posts the option to edit at will)

I was thinking about it and doing some reading as well. This style padlock seems to have discs in it which have a hollow center to allow for the key to enter and then engage each disc, and rotate them out of the way of the shackle, where there are cuts on the exterior diameter of each disc. God that sounds like the earliest example of Abloy technology ever. And they say he got the idea from an office counting machine...

Jaakko, any comments from your camp on the Scandanavian design trickling down to the Abloy Classic design?

Thanks!

Pretty sure you're dead on.

OP, if you want additional information you might want to ask over at AntiqueLocks.com. This kind of stuff is their specialty.

Yep, that is a Scandinavian padlock, although the key doesn't look original. In greymans book High Security Mechanical Locks, look at pages 224-226. There are some pictures and explanation on it :)

The lock has rotating discs which lock the shackle at the points seen on the shackle. Very nice design considering the age, although it is quite trivial to pick open because of its design.

The story behind Emil Henriksson inventing Abloy Classic lock in my opinion can be quite true as he was a mechanical engineer and worked repairing mechanical devices. I believe he had no idea that the idea already existed in some form or that he knew but developed a better system :) The history is full of inventions that have been done independently by different people.

Basically that lock dates back to 19th century.

Yup, that lock was on something like the abloy discs principle, and existed before abloy perfected the mechanism, I believe that it was a type that was made by various small manufacturers to a general pattern, thus there is not a brand name but a type name.
squelch and jaakko are right.
