On Bumpkeys.

Postby BypassThis » 18 Oct 2009 22:58

I have 18 Bumpkeys stored on a single giant keyring. It is a hassle when I need to take one off for use. I was wondering of a more efficient system of storage and usage.

And, I am having difficulty using a certain key. It is the M1 padlock key. I have reservations to put the lock in a vice because I will not have this luxury in the field. For my hammer, I have tried using the handle of a screwdriver and a small hammer (about six inches).

Out of curiousity, what type of work/hobby requires you to keep all of your bump keys on you at one time?

The M1 is the last key I have ever had trouble with as a bump key, they just work. Besides that, what can't you pick that takes the M1 key? These are all easy to pick, why bump them? Also take a long wiper insert and put it through the hole in the key blank and apply pressure to the key using that, it's alot easier and you won't hit your fingers with the hammer, also, just buy a hammer, they work better and you won't bend up or put big dings in the top of your key as bad. And remember, you may think that your cool to bump everything, but it does damage locks somewhat and is very unproffesional.

Confederate, you have a valid point. I suppose I don't need them all at the same time.

thelockpickkid, I can (and have) pick(ed) the lock but I spent good money on my bumpkeys and I want them to work. Thanks for the windshield wiper tip. As far as securing an actual bump hammer, I am going to follow the tutorial on LP101.

I know what you mean by spending the money and wanting them to work!! Some people or companies sell some of these and they really don't work that well, others work extremely well. I actually make my own now whenever I want to play around with them, some people say that it doesn't work, but I duplicate keys to the lowest depth to code and they work great, some better than ones you buy! I don't do anything special like advance the cuts forward or modify the shoulders or any of the other things you hear and they work great.

Get you one of these, you can move the keys to the opening, open it, take the key you want off, clip it back.

Perfect. And simple. I was thinking about one of these but wasn't sure if the gate would stay shut during transportation, it's worth a try.
