Lock gets stuck right After I feel like I won

Postby xilus2 » 20 Oct 2009 21:17

My current bureaucratic housing situation does not allow me to open the balcony door!

Here is what it looks like.

Ok, so I picked this lock. At least I thought I did.
Usually once I pick a lock, and I get the center to turn then everything is done!
But not with this lock. It seems to get stuck after about a third of a turn as you can see in the picture. I am unable open what I believe is a Dead Bolt.

Do you think I am not turning hard enough? I also tried scraping at the pins again with no luck.
is there some other security mechanism stopping me from continuing turning?

I have tried both directions, and it does the same thing. It stops after 1/3 of a turn.
I can always turn it back to start, and I can hear all of the pins pop back down, and I am back where I started. :x

ether way you should just ask the owner to open it... if he doesnt have a key ask him if you can open it, non destructively... you shouldnt just take it upon yourself to pick it, the lock does not belong to you even if you are renting...

Dude, your first post? You need to read the rules of locksport. Did you know you can go to jail for something like this? People like you give locksport a bad name. Please read all the rules.

OK, hes already been told he shouldn't have picked it....being redundant doesn't help, and he won't be going to jail for picking(and failing to open the door) the lock to his balcony.
<jkthecjer> this kwikset did not yield so easily

We have no way of knowing that is to his balcony. Even if it was, the OP openly admits he should not have access- could very easily be a safety (or building code) issue..

Don't pick locks you do not own, do not pick locks in use. Contact the building owners, or the superintendent. Find out why you are restricted from using the balcony.

I never thought about the safety issues. I can remember in the news a few years ago that a balcony collapsed during a party and killed several people who fell 3 or 4 stories to there death. Good point Unlisted.

I went and talked to people and the door is open now! not a problem!
I knew I would only have to talk to them, but it was just more fun to try and pick it.

But I seriously just want to know what is going on in this situation, I have never experienced this before when Picking locks and I just want to know what is going on.
I have never picked a deadbolt before. Is this normal for deadbolts?
Do I just have to turn really hard? Perhaps my bobby pin and bent up pen clip were just not strong enough?

So why would this thing be completely easy turning until 1/3 and then stop completely?

I'm sorry but we cannot help you any further with this topic for the reasons already mentioned.

Also, I do believe Locksmitharmy has a very good point..

Part of Schlage's new design. It detects and thwart picking attacks. The IC inside detected you were picking it (it has calculated values for the motions of pins and your picking produced motions that go against it's expected values) and this in turn trigged a solenoid which essentially held the plug where it stopped. The solenoid retracts via a spring when the plug is rotated back to the locked position.

The easiest way to bypass this feature is to take an airhorn or something similar and place it in front of the cylinder once picked and use it in short, rapid bursts (3-4 sound bursts should be enough but if it isn't, keep trying). The mechanical motion of the sound waves produces a sort of "resonance frequency" effect which bounces the solenoid off the plug and allows it to turn.

I've heard of people using whistles blown in the direction of the lock as well but, that's purely anecdotal to me.

Deffinatly try what Confederate ways. I have herd this from many well respected locksmiths in the area... but I believe this is considered a bypass so it is probably advanced material...
