Hello all, I run a small mobile locksmith service up here in the great white north... BC Canada...lol I was wondering what you all thought of the LSDA product line..? Who is their primary distributor and where? From what I can find it appears like LSDA was swallowed up by Caba Ilco...
My first experience with LSDA was 10-15 years ago, I found them to be a very good knock off of the Schlage grade 2 Keyed Knob. Frankly I was impressed with the quality back then. I don't know if their quality has suffered since as many companies make their products of lesser and lesser quality to save money. <Rant> One example of this is Weiser Imo, at one time before being bought out by Kwickset they were an exceptable lockset to use in a residential install, along with an "X" series Weiser DB. Weiser was easy to service and parts were readily available. Their "Fixed Length" backset "Latch" was well designed. As far as I am concerned their current adjustable backset "Latch" is junk. </Rant>
Anyhow, now that I got that off my chest....lol Back top the original questions...
So, any ideas...?
Thanks in advance, Alex

LSDA locksets are good quality locks, both for residential, and light commercial applications. I don't know of any Canadian distributors, but if there are any, they would advertise that they are Locksmith Security Distributors' Association dealers. They even have restricted keyways available, at different levels.

Thank you for the reply. It's been so long now I can't remember where or what the distributor's name was...lol I think they were in Winnipeg or Ontario some where.

Do you guys have IDN up in Canada? Cos thats the only place I know of to get LSDA stuff in the US. I only liked their padlocks cos they were reasonably priced and still decent quality.

My only gripe with LSDA is on their cylindrical lockset line. If you tighten the trim screws past a certain point, the escutcheon/rosette is a pain in the butt to keep on the lock. You can tighten Schlage, Sargent, Baron, etc. well past a normally accepted point and still get the escutcheon/rosette to stay on but not LSDA. It's a real pain with hollow metal doors.
I wish they provided more support for cylinders in their knobsets because those things can very easily fall into the knob itself if you're not careful when you're re-keying and re-installing one.
Other than that, nothing but good things to say about them. I love their deadbolts. Really simple to service and install. Their hollow faceplates for deadbolts is something I'd like to see more manufacturers use. It makes mortising out the latch face much easier and it just looks better when you can use a rubber mallet to drive one into the door and get a nice tight, even fit.
I like their half bolts as well, moreso than Schlage's which are supposed to be higher in quality.
They're a good brand with quality products though. Definitely a reliable low-end brand. With a right bitting, you can make them tough to pick as well because they have relatively decent tolerances.
Wow I typed a lot, but, I'm sure someone can appreciate it.
