Medeco SFIC stack Caps

Postby thertel » 5 Oct 2004 23:46

Ok so I know the title even confuses me but its better than "little screw like things that screw into the top of medeco sfic cylinders to in place of the BEST style caps"

What are these things really called and who distributes them? I would try searching more, but I don't know what these things are called.

The reason I want some is that I'd like to retrofit my 40 BEST SFICs with this to make them easier to repin, as well as redoing most of my practice locks just for the convenience.

Thanks

Thomas

It's called a 'pin chamber allen set screw # 8-32 x 1/8"'. Medeco part number CP-011013-020. I've been wondering where to get them myself and plan to checkout the hardware store before I resort to locksmith supply stores (especially so given the scarcity of Medeco in Australia).

Update us if you find an online source :)

You can probably just buy set screws with those measurements from a good hardware vendor for half the price.

I've checked all the local and not so local hardware vendors....Home Despot, Lowes, Sprawl-Mart (not really hardware but just figured I'd check), Ace Hardware, Tractor Supply, and McCoy's all to no avail. I tried the one amicable local locksmith and he doesn't carry anything for Medeco, but was going to call his distributor to see if he could get some.

Well before finishing this post I went out to dinner and on the way home I saw a Mom & Pop hardware store. I looked over at my girlfriend with a grin on my face and pulled in much to her dismay. I grinned again and said "be right back", and went on in and spoke to Dave. I asked if he had some 7/32's set screws and he stops and thinks for a moment and leads me right to the holy grail of lock retrofitting. Then I looked at the price and saw they were 7 cents a piece and I took the entire container, much to Dave's dismay and even got an allen wrench to go with them. All in all it cost me about 9 dollars, and I got the best customer service out of all the stores I tried, not to mention what I wanted when I wanted it, and with a smile.

I know I'll be taking my hardware business there from now on even though it probably costs a little more then the depot store but at least I can get help.

Sure it will cost more than the depot, but you will get service, unlike at the Despot, where you get someone who tells you that "they don't make 4" diameter PVC pipe" Or "why would we have ball valves, this is a home improvement store". Have you ever tried asking for an item that is even slightly odd at one of these giant places? All I wanted was some of the welding rod that you can use for aluminum (!) with only a propane torch (!!!). I was told that you can't weld aluminum. I gave up, and never did get the welding rod. Okay rant off /.

Hey I know, I work for one of the big 3 office supply stores, we are all about customer service, and knowledge. We focus on that so completely that it interferes with other activities that are necessary for retail. But its also why we are the number one office supply store. You'd be suprised how hard it is to get associates to realize how important the customers experience is. I like the EAGLE card system, which I can't remember where I got it from, but was created by a man who helped start FedEx and various other start ups. The card is used given to employees to give to people who give them great customer service, the idea being that by realizing what they themselves expect and seeing how the recognition of that service effects the person being recognized, that they themselves will learn to strive for that same recognition. And let me tell you, the systems works amazingly well.
