Feeling the pins?

Postby Patch » 6 Oct 2004 23:51

Ok guys I have heard a lot of people say try and feel the pins move. I can feel the springs in the pins but can not tell the # of the pin without trying to look into the lock (doesn't work to well). I was wondering does this just come with practice? Also would it be harder for someone who has done manual labor most of their lives and have rough hands from the work to develop this touch?

1. there is no springs in the pins
2 you will learn - 3 weeks it took me to learn to feel which pin is which, im sure you will get there soon
3. the touch will come, you won't notice it, but it will come.

If you want to increase the sensitivity of your fingers, heres a little excersize I learned from some crazy old guys journal (He was a picker from the forties, Keep your eyes open for it, not very new information but it's a fun read!)
Anywho, he suggests that you take some hand cream, rub it really well into your finges, and drag them slowly over a piece of sand paper, trying to feel every individual grain of sand. He also suggested using an old file cause sandpaper shwas expensive or hard to come by or something. After two or three weeks of doing this, your fingers will be much more sensitive and feedback will be a heckuvalot better.
Of course you could just practice for three weeks instead :P

I found that practicing on a lock with a very wide keyway is the best way to go. That way you don't have to twist your fingers and tools and scrape everything in the lock... :D

I use a feeler pick for that, can't feel them with a diamond pick.

Moving the pins slowly is also essential at the beginning.

Try without using a tension wrench first and try and count the pins, etc...

Well, on I go for practicing, only 3 months left in my three weeks of practice :D
