So, i've been reading that you can use a cokecan to make a shim for a padlock. Does anyone have pictures or step by step instructions? Thanks a lot :)

That subject has been discussed in these forums, including pictures. A little searching would find what you are looking for.

But when make your very first post "how do I shim a padlock?" then people are going to be a bit suspicious of your motives.

Perhaps you should stand in a corner and wait for a moderator to come along...

shim

Postby pickersRus » 7 Oct 2004 18:27

SEARCH !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok , now that that is out of the way it is really fairly simple to make a padlock shim from a coke can , or any other similar material. Basically just cut out a rough T shape from the material. bend the vertical leg of the T around a screwdriver or some similar sized round object. Get the round shape as smooth as possible and this is the part to be inserted between the shackle and lock body. The horizontal part of the T is used like a handle. The rough dimensions for the flat T shape is about 3/8" wide for the verticle part and about 1" for the horizontal part. The overall height should be around 1". Although this is a poor description you should get the basic idea.

usually shims don't work, unless its an old padlock. new master padlocks have the ball lock system

It's not so much of the ball design, It is that there are TWO balls on the new ones. One for the heel, and one for the toe.

think about what a shim does......... its not the most complex tool in the world. its basically a bit of metal that fits between the shackle and the body of the lock. so find you padlock... cut some coke can into a strip that will fit down the gap and he presto... youve got a shim. you can then make another with an angle on one side so you can rotate it into position which makes it easier to depress the locking mechanism.
