Please help!

I have a question for everyone out there in the lockpicking101 world. I have a key that my grandfather gave me. Its a regular cylinder key, but it has a small notch cut out on the bottom of the key. I've never seen that on any kind of key before, and I'm very curious to know why and what that notch is for or what it means. Anyone who can help answer my question or tell me anything about the key would be much appreciated Thanks! I'm going to attempt to post a picture of it now.

That is a 6 pin Titan type control key for removing the cylinder from a Kwikset deadbolt lock without disassembly of the lock. The notch permits the retaining pin in the cylinder to drop releasing the cylinder when the key is turned to the correct position.

This key is use to rekey or removing the cylinder from a Kwikset deadbolt lock
you are not going to see this key at home depot,unless you get it from a locksmith
or on ebay hope this helps.

kwick set core change key..this key will remove cly from the lock set to rekey lock, with out take'n off the hardware

Thanks guys. Helps a ton. One more question.. I'm guessing the key cuts have to match the pins in the cylinder in order for it to work right? Like it can't really be used as a tool to take out cylinders for just any kwickset deadbolt

Yes that's correct, the key has to be cut correctly for the lock. Otherwise it simply won't work.

You can also make a copy of the regular key and put the cut on the backside of the blade in the same spot and it will also work, makes it to wear you don't have to buy these blanks

Or just make a bump key.

you can also copy the key you have and keep the control key back from any use you have for it so when your neighbor borrows the key no slipups happen.

looks like the individual key can just be slotted to make this control key and it probably doesnt matter how carefully you shape the cut as long as its big enough to pass a ward is my guess.

MCM good one, you read the cuts with your caliper eye, I used to do stuff like that but my eyes are not what they used to be.

Does that mean that when there is no key in the cylinder while it is turned (read: when picked),
the cylinder will come out of the housing?
