Wrenchproof locks? Do they exist?

Postby krytonlister » 23 Dec 2009 5:41

Hi all,
Last month i caught the bug, got myself some picks and made some wrenches and played around with a couple of locks i had lying about. Success with both locks..soooo this week i went out and purchased 4 locks, one of which is puzzling me, ( i did the other 3 - less than 15 minutes in total ) the problem is...the lock does not let me use my wrench, it is not possible to put tension on because the keyhole rotates 90 degrees when pressure is applied...thus hiding the pins and thwarting my plans, the keyhole looks to be in two seperate pieces, although i know it is only one. Does this make sense to any-one? Sorry i have no pics at the moment, will take some when i'm home. The key has two square notches in it-one either side. ( i think only a pic can describe the key to be honest-i'll get on it). The only info on padlock is 'china 50mm'. Appearance wise it looks like any of the 'Master laminated steel pin tumbler padlocks,no's 1,3,5,7,15 and 17.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Is it a pin tumbler lock or a warded lock?

Hi, i believe it is a pin tumbler but..hope this makes sense now, i think they are square/rectangle pins? if you imagine a key with with a square notch, one either side and a couple of mm apart, then these 'gaps' would fit over two 'fixed' blocks in the keyhole, which i guess says that the key is moving up 4 square blocks/pins.. it did'nt make much sense did it? another way is to say there are 4 rectangle pins in the lock and to prevent a wrong key being inserted they have put 2 'fixed' blocks inside which correspond with the notches on the key.

Its a warded lock, not a pin tumbler. You cant pick it like a pin tumbler lock.
Does it look something like this?

You dont pick warded locks with traditional picks. You'll need a tryout key. Read up on how they work and you'll see.

Just bend a piece of wire into an L shape and insert it into the keyay, feel for the latch and turn like you would with the key. There is a guide here which will help you out. :)
