Trouble with brass lock

Postby osyris » 31 Dec 2009 11:40

Hey, I am very new to lock picking. I just picked my first lock, a masterlock 380. I had a hard time learning how it worked compared to my practice lock, but mastered it in about 2 days. I got bored with it, so I bought a new lock, a Taymor brass padlock from walmart and I just can't get going with it. I am cannot feel which pins are binding, none of the pins seem to "click" to turn the plug. Does anyone have any insights into this lock that may help me? I have tried light, medium and heavy tension and nothing seems to help.

Thx!

Probably just tighter tolerances. I can't feel which pins are binding in a couple of my locks but if I go over each one carefully I can still feel very faint clicks as each one sets. It's just a matter of practice really... if you can't seem to find the right tension, try this:

1. raise all pins as high as they'll go
2. apply heavy tension
3. reduce tension slowly and gently, counting the clicks as each one falls back down, and note how many you hear (could be any number)
4. Repeat steps 1-3 and when the last pin clicks back down, stop reducing tension. All you need to do from here is increase it by a hairs amount, and you should now have the perfect tension for that lock. So if you hear 3 pins drop back down, lift them and apply heavy tension again, reduce slowly till you hear 3 clicks, then up the tension a tiny bit to bind that first pin and keep it steady. Hope this helps. :)

Not familiar with that brand but I'm gonna take a wild guess and say this lock is probably made in China? If it is then maybe it has a couple security pins in them. I've heard before in the past that some of the cheap asia made padlocks will have that feature for some reason. But again this is just a guess.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

@Solomon - That did help, I find that I can get a little bit of response from the lock now. I can't pick it yet, but I can get a pin or 2 set.

@eyes_only - It is a cheap lock that I found in Walmart that was made in China. I know in theory how to detect a security pin, but have never done it in practice. I might take this one apart to see how it is working and buy another one after I figure it out.

thx!
