I would get something more traditional like this set, http://www.southord.com/Lock-Picking-To ... XS-08.html

That kit has everything you'll need as a beginner. We don't really recommend the jackknife set because the handle on that tool is a bit too big and can dampen the subtle feedback you need to sense to successfully pick a lock. The pick gun is really only useful to locksmiths or people in law enforcement who need to open locks quickly without much training in the art of lockpicking. It wouldn't help anyone to develop the basic skills needed to get proficient in this hobby and so it's not recommended for new people to buy one.

Other than that you need to practice, practice, practice. There no easy way to learn but learning the right way will make it easier. I'd recommend reading the MIT guide if you haven't done so already. It should be posted as a sticky in the general forum. Hope this helps somewhat.

I'll save squelchtone a job,

As pivotal of a tutorial the MIT Guide is, it is outdated and the graphics inside are lacking clarity.

May I suggest you take a gander at the Locksport International Visual Guide to Lockpicking (it's even in COLOR! =)

Enjoy!

Thx.
So,what lockpick set should i buy for starting picking EU locks?

I think that this one could be the best ,what do you think?
You know that sending form usa to italy isn't cheap and fast,so,what else should i take?
I think that my budget is about 50 euros,72$.

If i thake that one is 30$,20$ of shipping,i've 20$ that i can also spend for having a great start set.

Any suggestion?

I think that was a good choice for you ,since you are in Italy
so all you need to do now is practice, practice, practice
good luck and enjoy your new picks.

No one even answered the real question. I vote Jack Knife all the way. Lat 17 picks break frequently and their is no skill involved.

If there were no other options and I had to choose between the two, I'd go with the jackknife aswell. I wouldn't say there is no skill involved in the use of a pick gun though. Less, definately, but it's by no means an automatic tool.

Your Right. I would like to retract my statement about the no skill involved. I forgot that with the LAT 17 you could always stick the pick into the lock too far making it more difficult to get a true set and also damaging the pins even faster. On a side note the LAT 17 picks break super easy.

the question of jacknife v pickgun to me is crap v crap,

the OP got good advise, and followed it he did not spend too much and got a set that will serve far better than the gadgets he was considering based on advertizing propaganda.

he could perhaps us a bit of fine sand paper on the sharp square edges of the picktip and shaft to prevent the wards from fouling his picking attempts, but thats always good advise,

Now he should start finding wiper inserts or sweeper bristles to make into tensors that fit his style, don't depend on the tensors that come with any commercial set, exclusively, You will have greater success if you are careful to watch how the tensor helps you or hinders you, remember, if the tensor blade at the bottom of the keyway is stuck, bound, its working against you and you need one slightly wider or thinner, a tensor at the top of the keyway can be stuck firmly and still useful, if it is not so deep as to interfer with the first pin. europeans must read top as bottom and bottom as top
collect metal stock that will make custom tensors for top of bottom of the keyway or for topandbottom of the keyway, you can find a lot of advise on this right here in the lp101,
there are a lot of posts on this site, so I recommend using search and using it well with the right search terms.

The only reason people even buy the Jack Knife is because it's convenient and discreet. Advertising propaganda? Their is definitely no advertising propaganda with the Jack Knife. Southord barely even advertises it on their site anymore.

Ok, how would I know how people become so convinced that this is a worthy tool, I was just guessing,
Does your tag line mean you are a neocon?
I believe Goebbels, the original proponent of the big lie said that if it is repeated on the media often enough, most of the sheeple will just believe it but some will stand up and say Look at whats really happening, until they eventually get trampled by the sheeple who hear the lie so often and care so little for truth that they just buy it. Its working for faux news and their repuglicans.

People like this tool because it is convenient to use when necessary. Not because of propaganda. Neocon? Are you meaning "Non Conservative"? The slogan originated from World War II.
