Identifying Office Cabinet Key

Postby shakmizzle » 14 Jan 2010 16:12

Hello -
I recently purchased some office furniture. The key has been misplaced and I have an old image that I am hoping can help ID it. The key has A P L. written on one side and a 4 digit number on the other. I have been looking at key blanks for quite some time and I find similar ones but not with the same groove and double sided features. I appreciate any help and look forward to hearing from the esteemed members of this forum.

Thanks,
Sharky

Looks like a bog standard key for generic single sided wafer cam locks... how old is this "furniture", and what is it? If it's a filing cabinet I'm pretty certain the locks are almost all identical. Nothing special about that key by the looks of it, just about any locksmith can make a new one for you. You may have to call one out though, can't exactly bring a huge hulking filing cabinet into the shop.

Could be LAS or Hafele or Huwil. Probably LAS.

I suggest it's an Asian knock-off. Probably wont be any codes listed. But it would help to know the code number for searching in a code database.

When I get asked to copy these kind of odd double sided keys we usually didn't have the exact ones on the board so I would use the closest key we had which were usually motorcycle or ATV type keys from the foreign "X" series. Had to do a little extra cutting and trimming with a file sometimes but 90% of the time it came out very well. Of course this works better if you can try the key in the lock to make sure it'll work to save the customer from having to make multiple trips from the lock to the shop.
If a lock is a puzzle, then its key is the complete picture

Is the cabinet locked? If not you could remove the lock (often on office furniture it's only a spring clip or a nut holding it in place) and bring it into a locksmith to get a key made.

Can you take a picture of the key profile (from the tip) and if possible , tell us the 4 digit number on the back. That really helps.

Do you see any numbers on the lock ? Maybe stamped on the lock face ?
