Deadbolt lock

Postby benoj6 » 18 Jan 2010 19:19

alright so i don't know much about locks and lock picking except for the basic concept. The other day i picked my roommates lock to get something out of his room ( he is on vacation and told me i could try if i wanted to). Afterwards i noticed the key slot was turned sideways. now i know you can't pull the key out of the lock unless the slot is vertical but when he gets back will he be able to put the key in to be able to lock and unlock it or could it be broken?

If the plug is rotated sideways then it's picked. Use your tension wrench and turn it back to 90*.

Of course it isn't broken, there is no spring return in a deadbolt. Common sense man, turn it back.

You didn't need to pick the lock anyway. Two words: master key. All you had to do was ask whoever is in charge of the building, and they would have allowed you to go in and get whatever it was under supervision. You're registered as a student there, so they will have no problem doing this for you. What was in there that you needed so badly anyway? I guess if there was an orgy going on and you couldn't get in because nobody could hear you knocking on the door, you wouldn't want the janitor to see... but apart from that

On a serious note, you could have gotten into a lot of trouble if someone saw you... saying it's your friends room and he said you could pick the lock while he was away isn't gonna cut it. You'd still get punished for doing it, and not only that, but any time something goes missing without explanation, who do you suppose they'd think of first? Come on man, try and be a bit more responsible in future... we get a bad enough rep as it is. ;)

If your friend is locked out of his house, and there is no other way in, by all means. But in a college/university/workplace, there is no need. There is someone there who is paid to help people out with things like that.

Please read the rules.

Never pick a lock in use.

This is a hobby. This forum frowns on people who pick locks in use. By all means, pick a lock that you have on your bench or fitted to a display, but picking locks in use is a big No No here.

People ask me once a month, hey Squelchtone why you such a jerk to people who come saying they picked a lock that was on a door, whats the big deal, nothing's gonna happen.

Well, yeah, things happen, like the thing above about the plug not being in the correct orientation. So next time I see someone getting defensive because I jumped all over them, please remind me to link to this post.

and get off my lawn you teenagers!

Are you for reals? That is Clint Eastwood!! In the movie "Gran Torismo" If you haven't seen it, you really have to as soon as possible, the best movie he was ever in.
