Plug Spiner On DeadBolt

Postby VeNoMouS » 18 Jan 2010 19:45

HI guys,

I got a call from a mate before, some one had some how locked the deadbolt lock at their studio and they didn't have a key, luckily I had my picks in my bag, anyway, so I rocked around there and picked the lock pretty much right away by raking it, how ever i got 1 half circle around with the tenson wrench, then it appears to have locked itself again kinda, its hard to explain, there is no tension/spring on the pins so you cant get past this point, is this a security measure? As i have seen this on one other lock, would a plug spinner get around this problem?

It's possible that the top pins have slightly fallen in the bottom of the keyway which I assume is now rotated to the top from your description. You can use the flat end of a diamond pick for example to push those pins back up into the upper chamber and use a tension wrench to turn the lock whichever direction you want.

But this is why we don't recommend picking locks that are in use usually.

You most likely picked it the wrong way, and as Eyes said, the driver pins have entered the bottom of the keyway. Get the flat side of a pick (or tension wrench) and push them up while tensioning the plug.

Exactly what Eyes_Only said. We really need a "halp! the plug is stuck half way round" thread in the stickies cos this gets asked way too much. Why so many people can't seem to figure it out for themselves is beyond me. :?

Heck the first time I did it I knew exactly what happened. Had the same sinking feeling the one (and only) time I took an empty plug (no bottom pins) and spun it around locking the driver pins in it.

I did that with a padlock core once, wasn't paying attension to what I was doing. I nearly died what it happened, tried fixing it but my efforts were wasted for a good while and I ended up getting fed up so I basically just pulled all the springs out to get it back apart. It is now in working order again with shiny new springs, and I learned a valuable lesson aswell, so maybe it was for the best.

i did that once too and had that OH S***! moment. i fixed it by putting very light tension on th plug so i wouldn't damage the springs and picked it with a long hook. the difficult part was that they were all spools.

Mine was the core of a Master 930 so I just said screw it. It now sits in a glass jar on my desk as a reminder. :)
