First off i would like to say hello and interduce myself, Hello all nice to meet you.
I am New to this i have ordered a small pick set and i have a couple pad locks im working with , i want to buy a dead bolt type lock to work with, i only have a walmart in driving distance my question is dose this retail store carry a lock you would suggest for a noob so i can remove pins Etc Etc and practice as explained in Beginner's Lockpicking Exercise - by digital_blue, ty for your time and info

i bought a cheap chinese deadbolt from wally world for like 5 buck and i repined it to my hearts content. the only problem is i have yet to see a lock there that has security pins so you are stuck with standard pins if they are your only source of locks.

Brinks deadbolts at Wal-Mart have spool pins.

I'm normally not real big on Chinese locks, but the Brinks is manufactured to a higher quality standard than Kwikset IMHO.

I see China now where Japan was in the 60's; just starting to produce quality items, but stuck with a bad reputation. I predict that within 10 years China will have a better reputation and will produce high quality items to compete with all other countries.

Not at all.

It is a replacement core for certain types of cupboard locks only. The core is removeable because they use a longer key to drag the retainer disc at the back down.

Brother Paul, have you tried visiting a locksmith shop and politely asking to buy some of their castoff locks for the price of scrap brass (about $1.50 a pound). Or is there a Locksport group near you? Houses for Humanity (did I get the right name?) have their own kind of thrift store and you can get all kinds of doors and locks cheap. Or find a house or commerical building being torn down and ask a foreman if you could have a few locks (amd give him $20 or so).

If you HAVE to buy at retail, I'd go for Lowes or Home Depot and get a Kwikset single deadbolt or if you're lucky, a replacement cylinder.

Thanks for the info ill try that and it is "Habituate for humanity" and there is one the next town over. i live in Western NC , we have 1 lock smith and no stop lights around here and he is a grouchy old Drunk and though im 6ft 5 220 lbs im still kinda afraid of him maybe ill get up enough nerve to ask him about it lol

Yow. That;s pretty rare bad luck there. Grouchy AND drunk. Maybe he needs to drink more? Less?

<sigh> Back to the locks. How about a junk yard? Some old Ford door locks, maybe? A flea market for cheap padlocks?

If you get a Kwikset lock, get the standard deadbolt, not the Smartkey version.
