I have used a bench pillar drill for some milling. As long as the tolerances of the drive bearings dont allow much radial/longitudinal play AND you have a way of locking the depth of the chuck you can get away with it. Importantly you will need a compound milling table and good engineers vice to get any real use out of it. Also spending some money on quality tooling fit for the job is recommended.
By the time you add up the cost of the parts required you will probably find it's better to invest in a new/used mini mill.

DO NOT try to use router bits designed for wood on any metals, remember "Use the right tool for the job"

Invest in a mill....

Seriously, I know it's £400 odd, but pillar drills aren't designed for sideways movements, the tolerances are not as close, and you still have the problem of locking the depth off. You won't have any fine feed either which would make the locks totally rubbish.

Diddn't you get a lock from me a while ago? I remember your username..... how is it holding out? Hope it taught you a lot :)

I'm probably 0 for 400 in looking for safes behind wall paintings
