Broken off key

Postby okama » 26 Feb 2010 8:35

Hi!

A friend of mine got a problem! He broke off his key while it was inserted into the lock. Don't ask me how he did it.
We managed to remove the lock so far.
Here is a picture (sorry it's so blurry) of it:

I don't know if it helps but here's another (I know bad) picture of the lock:
lock02.jpg

I'm a newbie so I suppose it's a high security euro lock.
Here's what a similar key looks like:
similarkey01.jpg

The key has broken off about where the red line is:
[picture in next post]

Now there's still the rest of the key inside the lock.
He couldn't just insert the other part of key into the lock because the first pin wasn't pushed down by the remaining part of the key INSIDE the lock.
I managed to use a tension wrench and a pick to push the first pin down, so that the rest of the key could be inserted and the lock could be turned.

Besides me not understanding why I (as a newbie - all I could pick so far was a cheap padlock) couldn't already turn the lock with the first pin set (I suppose it's a security pin but is it really THAT hard?), how can we get the rest of the key out of the lock?
All I can tell you about it is that keys can be inserted at both ends at the same time and it even can be locked/unlock with a key inserted on the other side.
Should it be possible to use something like a long pick or a needle to push the key out from the other side? Because we tried and it didn't work. But we don't even know if there is a "wall" blocking in between or not :-(

My friend would be very happy if he could just get a new key instead of buying an expensive new lock.
So help is really appreciated!
Thanks a lot!

Im sure this is a classic case of key extractors, failing that take the lock apart
its not that difficult to dismantle and repair the euro cylinder, you just need a plug follower
and tweezers.

Thanks for link!

I'm afraid the only tools I have is the
"KLOM 31-Piece Set Hook Lock Picks" from dealextreme (sku.16416 - I'm not sure if it's allowed to post that link).
Besides, dismantling a lock (which is needed everyday) without experience at all sounds like not a good idea :-(

And ordering something from overseas or china isn't really an option because it takes way too long with one's door only being able to (un)lock with picks :-(

visit a hobby or hardware or DIY store and buy the smallest size Jig saw blade. They look like this:

or this type of saw blade is usually small enough to get into the lock, and hook the key in order to pull it out.

be creative, you can probably use your Klom set to hook the key as well.

Good Luck!

Im assuming the correct key is in the lock?

if so it should be no trouble to extract the plug and remove the keyblade

Sure for a lockie, but I don't think these blokes are lockies or have means to put it back together if they were to dump out the plug and all the bits.

Wonder if they could take it to a lockie and pay a few dollars to get it removed. Probably cheaper than running around stores looking for alternate means of key extraction.

Thanks for the idea man,

Thanks for the advice! It sounds promising.

I don't have access to the lock right now (my friend had to leave, put the lock back into the door and locked it again - rest of the key still inside the lock), but I'll try on sunday.

One thing that still bothers me though: is there always enough space above/below the remaining key so a hook-like tool can be used?

Yes, the correct key is in the lock.

Exactly!
Although I just dismantled AND put back together the cheapest lock I could get (about 15 Euros), I would never try that on that expensive lock! :-(
(Please don't be confused! This is a totally different lock only bought for learning how to pick - which I still can't pick :-()

I almost forgot to post this:

Thanks a lot guys! It kinda worked.
Although we couldn't get the key out with a hook, it was possible to push the key out from the other side :D
