Anyone thought about a Passaround?

Like I would take my lock and set up a list of ten people. Then it would get passed around for people to pick / play with.

Ever done something like this? I figure it would be a good chance for people who haven't played with an Assa Twin or S&G 833 or Biaxial to handle one.

Its a good idea in principles but over the net i think 2 things which might stop this from happening are...trust and shipping costs. Or if something gets lost in the post.......

This is a good idea but....... I'm pretty sure something like this has tried to be organised but was a bit tricky for some reason, other than that to me it is a good idea and is something that I have thought about, maybe is there are a couple going at a time, one from each region? say a Lockwood from my side, American from the states etc..

So you have to be a member for (insert time) with (insert amount) of posts to participate.

A S&G 833C costs about $500 on a good day. I'd pay $10 in shipping and insurance to play with it for a week. Probably the same with an Abloy Protec or similar.

I think the problem is that those with an 833C aren't as likely to want to ship them around to people they don't personally know or have had a digital relationship with for some time, yanno?

I think you're more likely to get people to pin each other challenge cylinders. Doesn't have to be a lock you're afraid to lose, but maybe some 7 pin jobber pinned to MACS with security pins and such.

Id rather the member is a proven and active buyer/seller. As time and post counts mean nothing online.

I do really like the idea of this, its just it feels like something with to many uncontrollable factors. What happens if i receive that S&G 833C but its been broken in transit??? thats a lotta lock to have to replace, and the replaced lock might not have the same feeling the previous one had due to manufacturing difference=sad&angry member.

and to be honest theres so much effort involved in even starting to set guidelines, rules and screening up on a forum......I'd doubt the powers that be will go for it, and to be honest i wouldnt blame them.

That being said there is a buy-sell-trade section. There's nothing stating the trade has to be permanent. So you could always use that making sure to state guidelines and that its a 'temporary trade for 4 weeks' etc in your post.

If your idea gets popular im sure a subforum would be added to keep the buy-sell-trade section 'tidy'

Posts and activity make sure that the member at least has some roots. I'm not going to throw it all away for a $3-400 lock.

If you manage to break a lock in transit, that's where you have insurance. The person with the lock is personally responsible for it getting to the next person in once piece. Insured delivery via USPS (US only though....) will also cover it if anything does actually get broken in transit.

Tell you what, I'll find something worthy of a passaround and post it in BST (if the powers that be feel it's okay) and we'll see how this test run goes.

If I can recommend, before you do that, getting some interest from a specific number of people. Personally, I'll happily participate. Having a specific rotation and # of people will do several things for you. First, everyone participating can mutually agree that we'll trust one another. If someone doesn't trust the folks in the circle, they can simply bow out. Second, there can be a solid schedule so that you know when you'll be getting your prized possession back and who has it at any given time if, for some reason, you need it returned immediately. And lastly, it will be good way to iron out any kinks that might be discovered in a controlled atmosphere before trying to launch it to an amorphous collection of people.

I've often thought about a lock lending library in the past and am building one locally at the hackerspace I work out of, but often have thought about a traveling equivalent.
