Trainee Locksmith Job application.

Postby SpinewireUK » 15 Apr 2010 5:43

I am applying to be a trainee locksmith where I live.

Does anyone have any idea of the sort of questions I would be asked should I get an interview?

I do not have a huge amount of experiance regarding locks I have played with a few ages ago but that's about it. I have a rough idea how they work, the bloke said attitude is more important as training will be provided, however any knowledge would help.

Any free online reading material I should look at?

Thanks for any help your are able to throw my way.

There seems to be a few places around the UK that are looking for trainees, helps if you have metal working or carpentry skills for some of them, some are based in shops so retail experience helps.

It was mainly info about the sort of questions I would be asked at an interview, I have been blitzing though all the info on this site, of which there seems to be loads.

Even if I don't get an interview I will probably continue with this as a hoby, I forgot how much I liked this sort of thing.

Might get a Dremal and have a go and making a few picks.

Will probably need a few locks sold in the UK that are good to start off using as practice any ideas?

I read something about a cut away lock, I have not found where to get one from as of yet tho. I will need to have another look around the forum and see what I can unearth.

Some companies base their interview around the MLA exam type stuff.

So -

Random mortice lock, they point at various parts, you name it and say what its for.

Various cylinders, same as above.

Fit a mortice lock into a block of wood, then get it open (drilled, picked whatever)

Although if they are expecting to train you, they might not ask much about the locks, as they'll not expect you to know.
It's all about the tension . . .
