i am keen to find out about safes (fitting / opening ). Can any of you guru's recommend any good sites , books or trainers in the UK.

Safes are still a bit of a closed world, so you may struggle to find the information you are after.

Safe Ventures did do a course, but I hear they have stopped.

Other training companies are starting to do courses, but its only because they have already saturated both the standard locksmith and auto markets with new trainees.

Most of the books available are from America (Dave McOmie etc) so tend to concentrate of safes found over there. They are still a worth while read though.

To get more info in the UK, you will need to be a locksmith with some experience, so then you will be allowed info from say, the MLA, ICL, and other private websites that permit members by recomendation (Colti, Safe Engineers, etc).
It's all about the tension . . .
