What Key Machine is this?

Postby WolfSpring » 15 May 2010 16:20

Hope this is the right forum for this. I picked this up with a box of random key blanks, about 30 couple best, some other no name, at a Flea Market for 75 bucks. I found a "mini-mite" that looks like a newer version of this. The shavings are from the key I copied myself today, works great, wheel looks clean well taken care of and I copied a Schlage house lock key for my back door as a test and it worked. Had to wire brush it, but I'm sure thats normal. I'd just like to know a model or anything so I can, when I need to, order spare parts.

It has a Dayton Motor, and the Switch sais it takes 110 or 220 volts.

Thanks

I looked through the Ilco companies discontinued machines, I found:

http://www.kaba-ilco.com/key_systems/literature/literature_grid_key_machines.aspx?id=56&obj=d_manual

Which shows a 027A and then this site:

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://www.assuredlocksmithtraining.com/Images/Key%2520Machine-027.jpg&imgrefurl=http://www.locksmithtoolandsupply.com/store/merchant.mv%3FScreen%3DCTGY%26Store_Code%3DPLT%26Category_Code%3DTRAE&usg=__1WTFVwF7QncISMjxYH0uMRF4Hrc=&h=238&w=325&sz=13&hl=en&start=3&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=-eO0PoqsIrvkyM:&tbnh=86&tbnw=118&prev=/images%3Fq%3DIlco%2B027%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DG%26tbs%3Disch:1

Which claims to give a free 027 with there lessone and it looks like they have an inline motor where mine is band driven. Unless both are the A and the 027 isn't on the site. Is there a chance it's not an ILCO and someone put ILCO wingnuts on it?

Nice key machine...

That is an older one for sure as it doesn't have modern four-way jaws on it...

At $75 bucks does it really matter what kind of machine it is, or were you curious as to where to begin to look for parts if something ever wears out or breaks in the future ?

You have a solid sturdy machine which should outlast you except for maybe replacing or resharpening the cutter if you cut lots of keys...

Yeah I just wondering if I had to buy parts, it's pretty easy to use thats for sure, simple operation. Just gotta double check my key alignment. I'm assuming I can just order the 008 Mini parts it looks very similar to this one.

I just bought one of those off Craigslist (and will never do THAT again), and ended up getting a replacement rotary file wheel, key guide, and slotter conversion kit from a distributor. If you call Ilco direct they can help you find parts and if you're lucky, like I was, they'll tell you that the distributors are cheaper than Ilco themsleves.

Only the new rotary file cutting wheel matched up. The spacing between the jaws is different than the minimite. No attachment points for the keyguide.

If you need a new belt, just use a 3" O ring- less than a buck.

The older version of this machine did not include a top shoulder key locator guide. You just used the bottom shoulder for both or gauged the original and blank directly from the cutter and guide. Motor off please. As a method of efficient multi-key duplication, put the blank in the jaw up to the bottom shoulder. Then position it next to the cutter and place the key to be cut in until it touches the guide. Now all repeat keys can be cut by locating them with the bottom shoulder only.

The cutter wheel can be adjusted for spacing some by use of shim washers between the cutter and the bushing. The bushing can be moved. Also the key rest on the jaw assembly is dove-tailed and can be tapped to one side or the other.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
