Stuck Plug :(

Postby greysalad » 23 May 2010 23:29

Have been trying to pick a Weiser lock for sometime to no avail, only to find out that (when I took it apart) the plug was solidly stuck in there (this is after pulling out all the pins + springs).

Any suggestions on how to release the cylinder would be much appreciated/eternal gratitude to the person that solves it :P

Sorry... just to be clear: when you say the plug is "stuck", do you mean that it's not turning, or that you can't remove it?

If it's just that you're trying to remove the plug, it looks in your last photo like you haven't yet unscrewed the tailpiece at the back of the lock: you have to depress the spring-loaded retaining pin and then unscrew the ring that's on the back of the cylinder. (This is what stops the plug from sliding out the front of the lock if you were to pull on the key.)

Just be careful not to lose either that rear pin or its spring when you finish unscrewing the ring!

Schuyler just put together an excellent video on repinning cylinders that covers this and a bunch of other good tips.

Thanks for the great links, I'm watching them now.

When I say stuck I mean that the plug will not turn. I attempted turning it with a spare key, a vice and some pliers and the key managed to break before the plug would turn.

You already probably did this, but try WD-40?

Sounds like you've still got a pin or something trapped in one of the pin chambers. If you shine a light into the keyway can you see light through all the pin chambers?

I wouldn't have expected the pins/springs to drop out so easily if the lock were glued... but, um, did this happen to start by any chance with a friend of yours saying "I'll bet you can't pick this"? (Just checking...)

Hah! That would be a nice cruel trick.

Thanks for all the help :D
