New to the Site & Need Training Advise

Postby Malc » 19 Oct 2004 3:58

Hi all,

Not only am I new to this site but I'm not even trading as a Locksmith ( yet ). I am here seeking advise. Rather than jumping in to the business and looking at it through rose tinted glasses, I am doing as much investigation ( 6-8 months planning )as I can before taking the plunge. ie Business set up courses, Business Plans, Costs, time spent with a locksmith, marketing, advertising etc etc etc.

I need guidance on Training in Commercial and Home Locksmithing ( Not Autos at this stage )

My research has found three ( possible reputable ) company's in the UK. 24-7 Training, A1 Safe & Secure and British Locksmith Association. :?:

I would welcome any feedback or advise you may have or experienced on any of these training firms who offer Locksmith training. Obviously I want to gain the best training possible that will benefit me and stand me in good stead for the future. ( I also realise it takes years to become profient as well NOT just weeks of training ) I also want to build a good reputation as an honest, professional tradesperson able to give good advise and and offer a quality service....NOT a Cowboy.

I hope you can assist and many thanks

Malc

Hi as somebody who has done this i think you are going about it the right way check out the faq section as there are several threads on this subject, especially the training side of things. I too have posted a "start up guide" of what to expect and costs to factor for. Also look up pinky's posts as he has said a lot on this subject and tells it how it is, he also trained me and runs a training school with his partner ken, the 24-7 course you mentioned.

Be under no illusions this is a longterm thing as so many people are taking it up at the moment and competition is tough.

following our chat earlier on the phone, just to add that if you check this site alot can be learnt from here and from the members, if you are keen to learn the woodworking side of things, your local adult education centre would be a good place and the most cost effective.
for upvc repair training try mila daventry, dj supplyline , or any of your local upvc manufacturers / installers.

good luck and dont hesitate to get in touch if you need any more info and help.
