Lock Stuck at 180' - Not a driver pin problem.

Postby ed2900 » 18 Jun 2010 9:52

Hi guys,

So I just started lock picking a few days ago and I'm trying to unlock a standard door lock. It is an Asec model, that has 5 standard pins. The lock type is one of those where the lock has to go past 180 to release a latch on the otherside.

Basically I picked the lock so the barrel turned to 180' and it got stuck, I couldn't move it either way. So I read the faqs and understood the driver pins had fallen into the keyway, stopping it from moving. Using the flat side of my lock pick I am easily able to push the pins in place to allow the barrel to turn 180' back the original way (ie lock in original position). However even when I hold off the driver pins it will not move in the other direction, it gets a tiny bit of give at first once the driver pins are out of the way, but then it is stuck. But like I said in my title I know it is not the driver pins as I can move back to its original position without any trouble.

I don't know very much about locks so there could be something important I am missing, so if you could offer any insight or help that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Yes. Stop picking a lock that is mounted in a door, that's not what we're about here.. we pick locks in hand or on the work bench as a fun hobby, not a real world james bond, ocean's 11 spy scenario.

Your boltwork or strike is probably just dragging, try pulling the door towards you or pushing it away from you to relieve the pressure/friction of the bolt/strike against the door frame. also, use the key that goes to that lock as a tension tool, insert it until the 1st pin stops it from going in further and use the leverage the bow of the key provides to keep on turning.

Does the lock stop at 180 and then require more effort to turn when you use the key that belongs to that door lock?

It honestly might still be the driver pins. Sometimes when I pick one of my Schlage deadbolts it gets stuck and I can bring it back one way, but I cant get enough leverage on my tension wrench pushing up to bring it over the other way without trying harder then I like too. Also like Squelch said stop picking locks in use.

For everyone's info there is another possible problem that can cause this problem. It drove my boss crazy til I figured it out. On a normal mortise cylinder on which the pin holes were drilled from the bottom of the cylinder, the hole plugs can be pushed out by trying to withdraw the key upside down. If this happens, the bottom pins fall into the partial holes and lock up the cylinder with the key upside down or picked and turned. The only way to release the cylinder I saw this on was to remove it from the door, remove the key, and re-stake the plugs.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
