Schlage and southord

Postby melamine » 17 Jul 2010 0:29

I have the 5-piece Southord set, and i've been picking through a bunch of locks (all purchased from Lowes or Habitat Restore). Master #3, generic chinese padlock, kwikset, generic doorlock, and i've gotten to the Schlages. I've picked through two out of the three Schlages - having trouble with the third.

I noticed though that the special Schlage keyway makes it difficult for me to even reach to the back pin. I'm able to get around this somewhat, but the process of accessing the pins is... messy. I've been using the hook pick that comes with the Southord set, because i really like the idea of single-pin-picking - but i just can't really get the kind of single-pin access that i would like. Even moving the hook to the back pin causes me to have to move the other pins substantially - so essentially i'm raking without wanting to. Is there something wrong with the Southord set?

I did notice that the hookpick that i have - the proportions are a bit different from the hookpick pictures for the individual hookpicks that i see on the website. Is this just a manufacturing margin of error - or is the hook that comes with the sets different from the ones that you get individually? Ideally, i'd want a pick with a thinner profile (not the thickness of the sheetmetal - but the other one)... the Slimline set though means that the sheetmetal is thinner right? or is it that they have a thinner profile?

I'm still able to pick most Schlages - i just want to be able to SPP proper - not have to, as a matter of fact, rake all the pins in the course of my SPP. Someone tell me what i'm doing wrong here. Or is picking these locks really just going to always involve some "messiness"?

you'll likely want a slimline set (or at least a hook) if you're going to be working with heavily warded locks.

The slimline hooks aren't any thinner in metal width, but are lower profile as you suspected. also, the southord slimline hooks come in a greater variety of angles than the standard hooks, so you have more options.

best of luck!
Oh look! it's 2016!
