extreme newb question - these worth buying?

looking for some inexpensive locks that i can de-pin, re-pin and manipulate to see if this is something that will hold my interest longterm.

is this the type of thing i should be looking for, to start out?

You can probably find cheaper KIK (Key-In-Knob) cylinders for starting out... but, if you were to remove the Everest check-pin, they'd certainly work well for now for starting out, and would also still give you a challenge later on.

i have been poking around on and off for a day or two and just have realized i don't really even know where to start looking for inexpensive locks. aside from asking friends and coworkers if they have locks they are throwing out, don't use, etc... ebay was my natural next go-to spot.

have to imagine that getting a couple of those and messing with the pinning would be a good way to keep busy, maybe pick up a few cheap master padlocks as well?

Here's another thought- is there a well-established family locksmith near you? If you approach them politely and ask their advice they will probably sell you a few locksets and some spare pins and springs.

The plug follower you can buy, or use 1/2" dowel rod or 3/8" white PEX plumbing tube.
