Warded Master Padlock Issue

Postby chaos4zap » 9 Aug 2010 19:11

So I'm just getting started with all this and as you would expect, it's been slow (but fun). I have already accepted that nothing short of practice and time is going to get good. The one exception is a warded master padlock I'm struggling with. Everything I have read and watched makes it look so easy. I have a warded lock pick set and have followed instruction on using them...here is the problem, I put the pick to the back of the key-hole and turn and it turns and I hear a click, but the shackle doesn't open. After it turns I can push down on the shackle and I hear a click...as if the lock is clicking back in place. It seems like I am missing something here, like I am only partially picking the lock. Any suggestions guy's? I do not know what model of lock it is (it's not labeled) Also, there is a few different types of warded picks and I can't find anything that tells you how to select the right one? It seems like in all the videos they are usually using the same 1 or 2 picks, what are the rest for then?

I would try back and forth movement with the pick at 90 degrees to the keyway.
Have You tried making a T from the original?
Also if you have a key for reference, place side to side with the pick to determine how far in, You may not be in the right spot>

I tried the back and forth thing, to no avail (although I'm not sure if I'm doing it right, I'm not exactly sure what you mean by 90 degrees to the key way, like with it half turned?) I don't have a key for this one. It really feels like I'm in the right place. I can feel it click as it turns and like I said, i push on the shackle afterwards and can hear it click back into place (the locked position) is it possible that I have to turn it somewhere else in the lock? like at a different depth than just all the way in or are these locks not that sophistocated?

You may have to physically pull up on the Shackle, some wont just pop up, it may be unlocking.

Some of these warded padlocks have two or more springs holding the shackle. If your pick key has two crosses, they might be too far apart from each other or too close. It is also possible that the crosses are not wide enought to fully push apart both springs.

Try using the pick with only one cross. Put pulling pressure on the shackle. Pick the deepest spring and while maintaining the shackle pressure, turn the pick back and pull it out of the lock a little bit, and turn it again. Keep up this process. Both springs should be within the deepest 1/2 inch of the padlock. When both springs are caught the shackle will come out.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.
