It isn't that big a deal when I'm at home practicing, but if I were out somewhere helping a friend, it would be great to not have to carry a screw driver with me to tighten the thing. It would be prefferable to have another gun, if other guns are not as prone to the needle coming loose. I'm also thinking about removing their thumb-screw set-up and trying something else from a hardware store. Does anyone have any experience with that type of modification?
I meant the LAT-17, but yeah it's a problem with all of them from what I hear... I'm told the Brockhage is much better but for something you'll only ever use as a backup for really stubborn locks I don't see the point in buying another one. Especially since you're not a locksmith, you aren't picking locks in the field every day, so the chances of you ever needing to use it are slim to none (unless you really suck at picking

). Just keep the one you've got and stop complaining about it. The screw comes loose every 15 or so snaps, and at that point if the lock isn't already open you should be adjusting the snap tension anyway so it's not much extra effort to retighten the screw while you're at it.
You don't need a screwdriver to tighten it, you can get it tighter that way for sure, but it really isn't necessary as it comes loose just as easily nomatter how tight it is. You could definately make it better but I'm not sure how, personally it never bothered me enough to look into it.
