Southor LAT-17

Although I am much more interested in SPP as many locks as I can, I decided to buy a pick gun as a suppliment. If ever I have a friend with lost keys, it would be nice to have one in case I can't pick it (not to mention, after trying to open one of my practice locks via SPP for 10 mins with no sucess, there is a very slight feeling of satisfaction with being able to put the gun in there and just get the thing open!) I bought a Southord LAT-17 a while back and it works fine, but I have one major complaint. The tension screw that tightens the blade in is always coming loose. I know this tends to happen more when the blade is hitting the back of the lock and not the pins and I try very hard now to make sure I'm on the pins. I use a small screw driver to tighten it, but once it gets so tight, the thumb-screw just spins and I can't really get it as tight as I would like. I could use pliers on the thumb-screw end and then tighten it witht he screw driver, but I would like to not mark up the thumb-wheel with pliers. Does anyone have experience with this specific gun? Anyone have the same issues? I'm trying to figure out if it's just the design of the gun or if this issue exists with pretty much all guns. Southord seems to be a fairly low grade of products. I also have a set of their slim line picks that I use regularly and they distress and bend (thinking about upgrading to Petterson soon) Any advice you guy's might have on the gun's would be greatly appreciated.

Everyone who has one says the same thing, myself included. It's not really a big deal, just ensure it's tight before you start snapping and give it a quick tighten every 10-15 snaps.

Do you mean that everyone with a Soutord LAT 17 say's the same thing, or everyone that has a snap gun in general? It isn't that big a deal when I'm at home practicing, but if I were out somewhere helping a friend, it would be great to not have to carry a screw driver with me to tighten the thing. It would be prefferable to have another gun, if other guns are not as prone to the needle coming loose. I'm also thinking about removing their thumb-screw set-up and trying something else from a hardware store. Does anyone have any experience with that type of modification?

I meant the LAT-17, but yeah it's a problem with all of them from what I hear... I'm told the Brockhage is much better but for something you'll only ever use as a backup for really stubborn locks I don't see the point in buying another one. Especially since you're not a locksmith, you aren't picking locks in the field every day, so the chances of you ever needing to use it are slim to none (unless you really suck at picking ). Just keep the one you've got and stop complaining about it. The screw comes loose every 15 or so snaps, and at that point if the lock isn't already open you should be adjusting the snap tension anyway so it's not much extra effort to retighten the screw while you're at it.

You don't need a screwdriver to tighten it, you can get it tighter that way for sure, but it really isn't necessary as it comes loose just as easily nomatter how tight it is. You could definately make it better but I'm not sure how, personally it never bothered me enough to look into it.
