Help (picking 50mm padlock)

Postby leesioasi » 16 Oct 2010 20:13

I bacame curious about picking so I purchased a set. I have been trying to pick a 50mm lock made in germany off of my back pack because I lost the key. It feels like im hitting all the pins but the lock isn't opening. I was wondering what I am doing wrong. I would really appreciate some advice.

That must be a hell of a backpack to have a 50mm padlock on it...

Best advice I can give you is to learn how picking actually works instead of trying to "hit all the pins".

The lock isn't locking the bag closed :D . Either or how does pickin work. I raked it then set the remaining pins from back to front. What am I doing incorrectly?

If you don't know how picking works then I suggest you read up on it or watch some youtube videos.
Raking isn't the best way to learn to pick since you won't really get a feel for tension/pin binding.
Since this is your lock and you have access to it, take your time and learn to pick 1 pin at a time, forget the rake for now.

How did you set them? Just lifted them up all the way? If that's what you did, that is not how picking works, and that is not how a real key works. You have to lift each pin to a certain height, not all pins to the same height. As others suggested, please search a little or go to youtube and look up lock animations and see how locks work and how lock picking works. Specifically search for the term "shear line"

good luck,

Thanx, I will try to set one at a time. I also looked up shear line, and I was forcing the pins all the way down. Definitely the wrong thing to do
