Weird lock pick

Postby paultan » 4 Dec 2010 8:37

I recently come across a new lock pick, this is the image URL.

http://www.southord.com/mm5/graphics/00 ... AX-09D.jpg

Can anyone pls tell me the function of this lock pick. To me its grooves look like that of a bump key. However not quite sure how it works. Any information regarding this pick will be greatly appreciated.

It functions as a tongue scraper - you lick it and the sharp peaks scrape bacteria from your tongue.

In seriousness it's a rake. You insert it into the lock and give it a bit of a jiggle, like Beyonce's perfectly proportioned derrier would jiggle when sat on a washing machine, which depending on the keying of the lock may be very effective.

Some posters in the past reported success pulling similar shaped picks out of the lock violently and achieving a bumping effect of sorts.

Notice that the peaks are thick metal and between them is a very narrow thin part. the peaks will not bend while this weak area is there to take all the pressure, any bending will concentrate on the first of these narrow thin areas to be overforced, and once its metal crystalization has been stretched in this way, its only a matter of time til it breaks,

That pick is the opposite of a bogota, it has a lot of peaks filling the keyspace and only narrow valleys for the pins to drop into. On the bogota, the the secret is the wide open valleys, and keeping as much as possible of the peaks from overfilling the higher areas of they keyspace while still reaching in with very narrow peaks to lift the pins as the peak passes under.
A bogota has approximatly one pin on a peak, and the next in a wide valley, then then third on a peak and forth in a valley.
Its this negative space of the valleys that allow the pins freedom to find their shearline step.
If I owned this southord rake, I would grind out every other peak then sand it smooth to make it work.
Wake up and smell the Kafka!!!

It's just a rake, one from their 'MAX' range... there is one like that in the goso set, can't say I like it very much. I prefer the good old city rake, but I guess everyone has their preference. I'm not keen on the new handle design they're using for the max range, but I guess there was no point in them making stronger picks if they didn't add space age handles

Like raimundo said, you'll need to be gentle with one of those regardless of how strong the steel is. Can't mess with physics

Looks to me like something like that could function as a bump key (not sure the exact hight of all the teeth in the rake though) I know its a bad idea just to slam a rake in a lock to try to have that effect...but hey where all lock pickers and I hope no one resorts to bumping.
