Brinks Padlock Question

Postby xBMW M3 GTR » 29 Dec 2010 19:46

So a few months back, my aunt gave me a Brinks pad lock that she didn't use and I just picked it for the first time about 10 minutes ago. It wasn't a fluke or anything. it took a bit of time studying how this lock behaves in order to pick it, tried it again and got it the same way I picked before.

So, on a scale from 1-10, how would you rate the security of a Brinks padlock picking-wise

Theres no model number on it. Its brass colored (not a Brinks expert. I dont know if they make locks in other colors) Its a 5 pin lock, about an inch tall and a bit more than a quarter inch thick, has a drain hole in it about 1mm in size about a quarter of an inch away from the plug on the side away from where the teeth of the key would point. The lock is also square in shape with a rounded front and back. Theres a description. I hope one of you cam match it up with a certain model and be able to tell me how high security that lock is. I have heard Brinks pad locks are high security, but I Just want to know how much better im going to get after learning how to properly approach these locks in the future.

Brinks padlocks are NOT high security whatsoever. They are simply a padlock that some say is a notch better in quality than a normal Master brand padlock. They are fun to pick though because they do have security pins, that most Master padlocks seem to lack.

I have one here. It's 5 regular key pins, 4 serrated driver pins, 1 regular driver. The regular driver is in the 2nd spot. (I believe that this is common across all of them.)

Haven't managed to pick it. It's not what I would call high-security, but I'm not very good. There also seems to be a certain amount of slop in the plug (front-to-back motion).

very light tension is what will open these locks,

when you turn the key it turns very easily?.....

that is all the force you need to turn it, any more force and you are binding the lock and making picking harder.

Just sit in front of a tv show you like and move the pick and tension wrench like your not even trying to open the lock,

just exploring the pins with a very light tension,

be sure your tension blade can fall out of the lock when you are not holding it. if its stuck, jammed and won't fall, this is the problem you must solve first. often by fitting the end of a paper clip into the bottom of the keyway you can avoid this kind of binding at the bottom of the keyway.

The way I ended up having to pick this lock was use gentle motion from my s rake (I use lockpicktools.com's aluminum jack knife, so this is a good sized rake for this lock) to engage the spool pins. Then I use very small and thin hook pick I made from an engine dip stick (very tough and flexible) to brink up one of the 2 spool pins towards the back. This I raise it slowly and gently but this binds all of the pins. I the use the s rak again to reset more spool pins, pick another spool, binds, rake, pick, and repeat untill all are set. Im able to SPP but this lock just doesnt agree to it.
