Locking Picking tools in Australia

Hi All,

I have read the laws thread and i see that it is illegal to buy/own lock picking tool in Australia. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.


My question is, is www.GadgetsDirect.com.au a legit site for buying picks in Australia? I know its in the adds on this site but I would rather be safe then sorry.


I am sorry if this is the wrong area to be posting this sort of question, but nowhere else looked like a likely place to post.

buying picks is not the only way, if you have access to new sharp files or a grinder, you can make picks that are even better than any you can buy. the difference is in the sanding. commercial picks are not sanded, the companies don't believe that the quality difference is worth their trouble, as they are only selling the things, not using them.

I would do this however I don't have easy access to a grinder... That and when it comes to making i am pretty shit at it... Way to heavy handed.

Just need a chainsaw file and you can make picks no grinder needed.

other then that you might want to search how our other Aussies are getting picks with the search function.

Buying lockpicks in Australia is not illegal, or at least wasn't when I last looked it up. Locksmithing isn't even licensed in the Northern territory or South Australia so any one can do locksmithing and buy the tools though you will find that the Company's in Australia that sell the tools will not sell to you without knowing that you are in the trade.

Where in Australia are you.

I think GadgetsDirect is just a copy of DealExtreme, and most (if not all) of your items will come from China. Just because it's an Australian site, doesn't mean it bypasses customs.

Im an Aussie (in Victoria) and have bought a few different items from lockpickshop.com. Ive had no customs issues, but i think that might be due to the fact that their just listed as tools on the customs form. As for the legality of them, to be honest im really not sure, but I hope im not breaking the law by owning these tools.

The go is you buy them, have them at home, But DO NOT WALK AROUND IN THE PUBLIC WITH THEM! The cops can arrest you based on the fact that they are implementsof a crime. Whether you are up to no good or not so be careful.

Agreed, bloke I know got into a lot of trouble having lockpicks on his person when he was pulled over for a random search at a train station.
A case of wrong place at the wrong time, he went to court and the case was eventually thrown out.
I would advise you never carry tools in public unles they are in your own car moving house.
