Anti Pick Measures?

Postby ckc123 » 23 Jan 2011 14:40

I was thinking. Do any manufacturing have a mechanism that would detect a "picked" lock and prevent the lock from being used.

EG.. after a lock is picked, and the core starts to rotate, there is no more pressure on the pins, and the drop back down.. so why not have a "second" set driver pins which is snap down, and completely lock up the core, if it gets to that point and the pins are not at the top point (proper key in the keyway)

??

yes it would stop the lock from functioning (and lock the owner out) , but I guess that's better then letting someone in who should not be in..

It would be interested if someone were to encounter that lock, set the pins...then use impressioning. They could cut a new key while the cylinder is held at like a 5 degree angle. Then they could use the newly cut key to turn the lock with abandon. They would have to suspect the mechanism in advance though. ;)

'trap pins' are becoming more common in cylinders now although once activated usually render the lock useless.
You can pick some of the trap pins out of trap like on the BS Mila's but iv only managed a few and even then they trap up after every 90 degrees of rotation.

Really, locks with sidebars are going to provide the best 'traps' in future locks, they will just cut sidebar grooves in the cylinder housing to create them. Would be interesting to see how many you could cut before it affected the rotational quality of the plug. Imagine one that locked up every 10 degrees!?

hi ckc123, i have that project posted in here previously. and its halfway complete., since i was planning to install that trigger pins both side of the chamber pins. I call that "bumpkeying and lockpicking trigger mortise lock cylinder." its concept was , when bumpkeyed it locks the bumpkey, and when lockpicked, its locks the cylinder. regards
hi everyone, im glad to be a member of this very interesting community, our community of locksmiths. i hope i could help others, within my ability, and hope you can help me too, God bless us all fellow locksmiths.

Thats the problem with trap pins messing up the lock. I have a gege lock and that has trap pins if you want an example lock.
