Having problems picking a lock

Postby forte » 24 Jan 2011 20:35

So I'm having a problem with this lock. It's a small lock with blue horizontal stripes running along it's sides. On the top, beneath the locked metal arc, reads "Made in China" with some Chinese characters, revolving around a metal circle. At the bottom, next to where the key would be inserted, it reads on one side "DIAMOND" and on the other side, it reads some Chinese characters with a diamond symbol etched in. That's the best description I could give you of the lock itself because I don't know much else about it because it's just something my dad found in the basement.

I'm having a problem picking it. I'm not sure whether it's a five cylinder one or not but judging from it's size(it's not tiny; just small), it looks like it would be. I stick the torsion tool in and rotate it. I rake alongside the pins and feel as though I set most of them. When I try to push up the final pin in the back, but the lock itself quivers slightly.

So, okay, it's the last pin, right? Well I tried doing it without the rake. I set the pins as they feel. When I go over the first pin though, I feel the lock quiver again ever so slightly when I touch it. Ditto on the last as well.

I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. I tried changing the pressure I put on the torsion wrench because there might be a security pin but nada. Even with the slightest pressure, it feels bad man. It's my first lock. Can anyone give some advice?

does this lock have a heavy solid metal body or is it a light case made of sheetmetal stampings. the second type is a junk lock and the keys look like it, provides no physical security, as any steel bar shoved through the shackle and twisted can break the whole thing. they are easily pickable but not with common picks, they only have a spring or two holding the shackle in as in a warde master lock. such a lock is junk, not even collectable.

It may indeed be a pin tumbler lock, but something in your discription lead me to think of these.

It sounds like the pin you are having trouble with is possibly a security pin. Other pins may not be set correctly either. The quivering very well may be feedback on the tension wrench from moving a spool or other security pin at a false set. You may need to lower tension until you can push the pin up higher. Doing so might allow you to reach the real breaking point of the pin. You should read on security pins.
