Trying to pick a lock

Postby alastair16 » 29 Jan 2011 18:48

Hi

I am fairly new to lock picking and have only picked a few simple locks. I have been trying to pick my conservatory door lock (I know, bad idea picking a lock in use, but its my door so if I break it its my problem). I have described the problem I had below:

I inserted the tension wrench and used a rake to pick it. I managed to get it to turn after about 10 seconds, (now at this point I was thinking that was way too easy) but it only turned half way and then got locked there. I tried to turn it back to the locked position but it wouldn't move, though the there was a little movement. I then tried to turn it to the unlocked position but it wouldn't move, and there was no movement at all in that direction. Since that didn't work I put the key in the lock but it would only go in about 1/2 way. After playing with the lock for a little while I put my pick right into the lock all the way to the back and that seemed to release it and I was able to move it back to the locked position. After that when I inserted the key and turned it I realized that it was at the half way point in which the plug actually rotated (the point where it had got stuck).

Could anyone help me out with some information about the type of lock I might be dealing with.

Thank you

Sure, you're dealing with an in line tumbler lock.

And seriously mate, proper forum etiquette suggests that one uses the Search button first to locate similar threads which will answer you question.

Or.. as LSA suggested, you could spend 5 minutes thinking about it and it will become very clear that when there is no key in the lock, and you rotate it 180 degrees, the driven pins that are spring loaded inside the body of the lock will want to keep pushing out of their chambers, and since there is no key in the keyhole, they end up pushing out into the open airspace, which then stop you from rotating past 180 degrees because the pins are in the way. Pushing them all down with a pick or wrench, and turning at the same time, allows you to rotate the plug past them.

Before you go running around the house picking all the locks, learn how a lock works first, it will save you hours of frustration. And stop picking your door locks, even if they are yours, we aren't here to help you fix them before your mum gets home.

Cheers,

Thanks for explaining the problem, I really appreciate it. I am sorry about not searching first and I will do so next time I have a problem. I think I will also buy some practice locks as opposed to using ones around the house.

I suggest you to choose a lock that will not open easily when you kick the door. The locks you choose should have large thick throw bars, which will give the door support it needs.

Please read the threads before posting ridiculous answers to them.
