gun safe Door in the open position but locked.

Postby rskybizintrees » 19 Feb 2011 10:43

I was given a safe by a tree work client who had left it open but locked i thought it would be possible to pull the back and decipher the combo. I pulled the back and see it is of the sort that can have the combo changed Sargent/Greenleaf R6700 series. I would like to know if or how one goes about finding what the combo is by looking at the back or will I have to take the plates apart? In my research I cannot find any pictures of it as would be expected, I can usually fix anything given an understanding of the workings. I see that the combo can be changed but also see from reading that It will take a key to due such. Is this correct or is the key solely for opening the safe without a combo. I have an old grandfather clock winder that fits the square in what i see as the brass number dial. Sorry if my terminology is off. If anyone wants more info or pictures to show it is open and empty I understand. Thanks in advance Joel

I don't feel comfortable posting the reply to that on the open forums. Shoot me an email and I can give you a little more info on how those locks work. I happen to have one in my home

This should be easy enough to do.

Learn about SG6730 locks first here: http://www.crypto.com/papers/safelocks.pdf

Then when you know what a fence is and what gates are, you'll be able to extract the combination by spinning the dial on the front of the safe, while looking at the gates in the wheelpack and how they are aligned in relation to the fence.

You'll also have to know what dialing order is, so look that up for this lock model, it isn't going to be like a Master lock gym locker padlock, where you simply do Left-Right-Left.

Any further discussion of this topic in any greater detail or in any other direction would be inappropriate, but I think Matt's paper which is easy enough to google isn't too taboo to post here.

Good luck with your safe.
