Help with an Abus

Postby Jaife » 6 Jun 2011 16:59

I'm pretty new to picking, been playing around with some Master and Brinks padlocks just SPP mainly. A friend of mine brought me home an Abus padlock from his work for a challenge. I'm pretty sure it isn't a standard Pin lock, maybe disc/wafer or something?
Image I only saw the key for a second (since he's challenging me) and it looked like an old fashioned key with 3 teeth.
Will the even be possible for me with just a standard southord pick set, or should I admit defeat?

Thanks
Jaife

It's an ABUS 235Z. The 40mm version is 4-lever and the 50mm version is 6-lever:

I've only played a bit with picking lever locks... so it would take me hours to pick, but I'm sure some of our UK friends could do it in minutes. (At least there's no curtain.) :)

Either way, your Southord pickset isn't going to help you with this challenge. Have a look through some of the lockpicking tutorials here for Lever Locks; you're going to need to find yourself some appropriate wire and make yourself a pick and a tensioner (and that post in the middle of the keyway will add to the challenge).

Sounds like a fun challenge. :)
