I realize that this is an amateurish question but can someone please give me some hints ? Every time I try to file a key by hand I almost always make the cut to WIDE , I can get the depth of the cut without much problem but it seems as if the width of the cut runs into the area of the next pin. I am using differnet type files to try to avoid this problem (round , square , tiangular ). Someone , anyone , please give me some advice..........do I just need to use the very tip of the file or what ?

Since the average pin width is about 3/32nds, it might be a good idea to carefully watch the width as you file.

Obviously, if you are using a triangular file, the top of the hole is going to get wider the deeper you go.

So, a good idea is to use a very, very small file.
