Cannot find "www.lockpicking101.com"?

Postby lock-ed » 28 Jul 2011 14:27

I am getting this message when trying to find my favourite website: cannot find "www.lockpicking101.com", from home. However, when logging on from a different position, everything is OK.

At home I am running Firefox, on a Mac and Windows Laptop. Safari on the Mac gives same result. It has been like this for the past 3-4 days.

Anybody else experience the same?

It sounds like the problem is with your connection, either intermittent dropouts or DNS lookup errors. We use a satellite connection here at work and tend to run into both problems a lot.

Do you run into this problem with any other sites, at any particular time of day? Are you on a mobile connection? This might sound silly, but have you tried rebooting?

Try flushing your DNS cache.

I hear IT people say "flush your cache" all the time, but what the hell does that actually mean when it comes to Internet Options in Windows, IE, or Firefox? Is it just Clear Recent History > All in Firefox and in IE is it Internet Options > Delete Browsing History and check all the boxes?

I usually go into Change Adapter Settings for the LAN or WiFi and do Properties of TCP/IPv4 and make the DNS server Use the Following DNS Server: and set it to 8.8.8.8 or 4.2.2.1 whenever my provider doesn't resolve a website such as lockpicking101.com

lock-ed: Have you tried a different browser to see if your Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera, or Chrome are broken?

Thanks,
Squelchtone

This site pretty much covers all of it.

The short version is that your computer "remembers" where sites are for a period of time so it doesn't have to look them up all the time. Sometimes it "remembers" wrong or the site moves to a different IP address and the computer can't find it anymore. Flushing the DNS cache basically wipes that list so the computer is forced to treat every entry as if it's new, which usually fixes things.

I am overwhelmed with the response :D Thank you, guys!

Squelchtone, yes I have upgraded, and restarted,- and I have tried explorer, safari, Firefox.

Will try the DNS-flushing when I get home.

Thx again!
