Is lock Picking your dirty little secret?

Postby chaos4zap » 26 Dec 2011 14:18

So I wanted to trough out a pretty basic question: For those of you that pick as a hobby and have no professional need for it, is your hobby one that that you share with others, or is it something that you keep secret? It has been my experience that the immediate, knee-jerk reaction to someone finding out you lock pick is that it's creepy and weird. I think that being open about it being your hobby is much less creepy than if it's something you do that no one knows about. I tend to prefer the, if I have nothing to hide, then I don't mind talking about it route...but I was interested how others handle it. I don't think I will be putting it on my resume anytime soon, but I have no problem explaining to people why it is a very viable and rewarding hobby and does not have to include any malicious intent. Even after explaining it to them, I sometimes feel as though they don't "get it" and I am beginning to re-evaluate my stance on the subject. Even if they don't think you plan on steeling something, maybe it's just the very idea that you could get into their house if you wanted too that bothers people?

Noted. I wasn't sure even where to begin with what I would type in for the topic for a search (there are basically unlimited way's one could word it) I haven't been on the site all that long, but I have never come across it while looking around. I will check out your link and see what I can find elsewhere. Thank you and please disregard the post.

nah, we don't have to disregard the post.. all posts have their place and serve as a road map to the rest of the forum. Most of the replies of people talking about not telling family or friends or co workers about their hobby stem from other topics which may have titles and subject lines unrelated to what you posted. Someone may post about "A lock I picked at work" and then the replies start trickling in about how "now my boss thinks I'm dodgy or shady" or "don't tell too many people because they'll blame you if something goes wrong"

I've been thinking a lot lately about going through the last 7 years of posts and putting things in more granular and logically thought out categories and sub forums that are easier to search or browse. But I think I have enough hobbies right now, and that sure sounds like a big project to undertake. It's nice to dream right? =)

yeah, but its also better if someone does this, that they be someone with a granular knowlege of the topic so things don't get hopelessly mixed up by someone who just has a blind spot on some topic and cant therefore categorize it. Meaning if anyone does do this it should be squelchy :P
