Kryptonite Keeper

anyone know anything about this u-lock for bikes? it's not the kind that can be opened with a bic pen. it does an interesting thing where you can spin the 7 discs halfway with a pick, but then they all stop. if you insert the key at this point, it still won't open and you have to turn it back to its original position. then it will open. what's odd to me is that when you reset it in this way, the key doesn't seem to slide in any further once it's all the way back, but rather just somehow knows what you did.

i'm a real newbie here, so what i'm asking about might just be the standard mechanics of any disc (wafer? please correct me) lock. but i'd still like to know what's going on in there...

thanks everyone!

Sounds like a disc detainer lock to me...

*checks google images*

Yep. I don't know how well the kryptonite ones are made or if they use false gates or profile discs but in general these locks are cheaply made and relatively easy to defeat with the right tools and practice. Unfortunately we're not allowed to discuss them in the open forums, although google and youtube will turn up everything you need. I've actually written up a guide on these locks and done a 2 part video on them myself, which you should find without much trouble. :)

As I said, I don't know what kind of quality the kryptonite ones are so they might be more complicated than the cheaper ones. I do have a U-lock made by Kräll which is very well made and I haven't been able to pick it thus far, so if it's anything like that then best of luck lol, you'll definitely need it. Maybe someone here has had experience with the kryptonite ones, I can't say for sure but I did have a removable core padlock made by them before and it was pretty impressive. I wouldn't be surprised if their disc detainers were high quality, but you never know.

Abloy Classic......perhaps a bit advanced for a newbie.......heck perhaps a bit advanced for so called locksmiths in USA. USA locksmiths favorite tool is know as a battery drill.
