Getting behind a pin...

Postby Sl8r » 24 Jul 2012 12:33

Any recommendations on getting behind a pin without accidentally setting it?

I'm playing around with my 4 pin practice lock and it looks like this:

H - High Set
M - Medium Set
L - Low Set

Keyhole : HMLH

when I go to the 4th position from the Keyhole and try to set the 4th pin, it accidentally sets the 3rd pin. My intention is to set the pins I'm after. While it's nice to have the 3rd pin get set as a by-product of going after the 4th pin, it's not my intention and I consider it a fail.

Any thoughts on how to get around this? I've tried both a standard hook and a high hook and both seem to set that 3rd pin..

As far as gear, I've got a Sparrows Wizwazzle Set.

You could use a hook with deeper reach along with top of keyway tension, which it seems you have, so honestly I'd just count your blessings. You can't always pick a lock perfectly. If 3 and 4 set at the same time, so be it. If you set 4 and 3 overset as a result because of the binding order it'd be a different story, but then all you'd have to do is release tension until that pin drops down to the shear line before continuing. You seem to know exactly what's going on in the lock, which is definitely a good thing. I wouldn't worry too much about this particular lock. :)
