Where to buy used equipment??

Postby fawkesinator89 » 16 Aug 2012 16:29

I am planning to open my own lock smithing shop and am looking to buy some new as well as some used equipment. Obviously i will buy new picks but when it comes to key cutters, auto entry tools, small stuff like plug followers and hand tools....etc, where would be the best place to find tools used? You can't purchase a lot of locksmithing tools on ebay anymore because of their new rules so Im not sure if there is a place where most people post these types of things.

although things like key machines and lockpicks might be restricted on eBay, you can still get a lot of stuff on there that is lock-related. take a look at the thread on this forum about locksmithing - a good part of your day is done doing stuff that is not exactly lock specific - hanging doors, installing door closers, repairing electric key switches, running wires for magnetic locks, etc. think about a decent computer for things like receiving job requests, billing, writing estimates, emailing invoices, inventory, running code and master key programs. also, check out the equipment thread here. good luck to you!

I agree with Joe Momma. Craigs list is probably your best bet.. you can put the items in your hand, as soon as the cash exchanges.
You may want to place a WTB ad if you know exactly what you are looking for .
Additionally your local suppliers are a good source .. they know who is doing what around town.+ some even have a bulletin board with for sale / wanted postings.
If there is a local locksmith association you may want to make your requests known there as well.

good luck

I am in Paducah Kentucky. I did find a gentleman who is selling his existing business out in Evansville Indiana on craigslist, but i don't believe he is willing to part out any of what I need. I just want the supplies not the business as a whole.

I know a few shops that are closing but nothing really near you and they would not split it up anyways.

Check with James Hawley. He buys out shops and surplus equipment.

I'm pretty sure I have a Dominion semi automatic, a HPC Speedex and probably a few Ilco manual machines we no longer use. I'll get you a price. Shipping won't be exactly cheap, but UPS ground might not be too bad.
