[Newbie] Starting Lock?

Postby BreezerFly » 3 Sep 2012 5:20

Heya, so, from my previous thread I discovered that the lock I had gotten for starting out my lockpicking hobby is a Ruko 5 pin, with 4 security pins, spool pins, not too good for a beginner I suspect.

So what I'm curious about is whether someone can point me at a (pad)lock in Denmark that is easy for starters? Most of the names I find are U.S. and I don't really want to ship one from the U.S. to Denmark :)
I'll continue looking myself, but will be quite a bit easier if I get names to search for :)

If you are just a begginer than look for a lock doesn't have things like "high security" or "pick resistent" on the package. Any simple pin tumbler lock should be fine. I wouldn't spend too much on one if you are still a beginner though. Also are you using homebrew picks or did you buy some. If you bought picks I would polish them and get all of the burrs off and they will move more smoothly in the lock.

I guess I'll have to go visit a store then and check on it :P

I have bought some SouthOrd picks, do they need polishing? I guess I'll just check when I receive them tomorrow :)

both of my sets of southords needed to be polished when I received them.

Any specific way to polish the picks? Or is it simply rubbing sandpaper over 'em?

I found the best way to polish my picks was to start with a grit of about 400 and continue using finer sandpaper until it is smooth and shiny (around 2000 grit). However if you don't want them to be shiny but just smooth you can stop at 800 grit then use some fine steel wool. However they do look better shiny :D
