Frustrations (with learning picking)

Postby afternoonrepose » 29 Sep 2012 16:47

I've read all the guides and faq's and have all the terms and concepts memorized but when the time comes to pick a lock with more than one pin, I just can't. I have trouble picking locks when I move up to two or three pins and get frustrated and end up raking it, but that won't help me learn anything. Any advice?

Feel free to post your frustrations here too, though I'm sure they won't be anywhere near as basic as mine.

start with one pin....

increase to 2 pins....

Increase to 3 pins, etc, etc.

practise makes perfect.

I have been locksmithing 30 years (almost) and sometimes i need to get the old rotary pick out too.
One One was a race horse, one one won one race, one two was a racehorse, one two won one too.

I did start with one pin but the moment I put a second pin in, it just feels impossible without getting frustrated and raking it. Where do you recommend putting the pins? right next to eachother? in the front? one in the front, one in the back? how long should a lock with two pins take me to pick? I've spent 10+ minutes with seemingly no progress on some of the combinations.

Back up to the beginning. You say you have read the concept of picking but you have somehow missed the point. With two or three pins in, apply turning pressure, insert your pick and close your eyes. Feel the pick tip as it moves over the pins. some may be springy and some may be rigid. When you have adequately felt the difference and can tell one pin from the next, push the rigid one up until it clicks in place. Feel how it is no longer rigid nor springy. With the top pin held at the shear line by your turning pressure that bottom pin is now free floating and 'picked.' Now feel the other pins and make the same determinations. Picking requires patience and luck as much as skill. You cannot force it. Practice will improve your skill and feel.
Nothing is foolproof to a talented fool. Wisdom is not just in determining how to do something, but also includes determining whether it should be done at all.

Perhaps study a little bit more of what you're trying to accomplish. http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jacqueline.goff/sollybook/Lockpicking%20Detail%20Overkill.pdf

this a great book, and free, thanks to Solomon.

Hope that helps.
