Kaba Model 1011 combo lock jams

Postby 535678 » 31 Dec 2012 20:14

We have a Kaba/Ilco combination lock (Model 1011) on our gate.

1. The combination no longer works.
2. When the handle is turned from the inside, the latch jams in the open position about 50% of the time.
3. The small pin that runs parallel to the latch -- i can't remember what it's called -- usually jams inside the latch assembly when pushed in manually, taking the latch with it, causing both to be jammed.

I can unjam it by tapping on the latch and/or rotating the doorknob both directions, but I still can't get in from the outside.

Any ideas?

As for the latch, try spraying some lubricant on it, like LPS or some other silicone lube. It might free up the part that is sticking.

If MBI's suggestion doesn't help, the latch and/or pin might have been bent, either by the gate slamming shut with the latch out or because the gate has dropped and the latch doesn't easily slip into the keep and has to be forced. It might be worth replacing the latch (which can be done without replacing the Combo unit).

Otherwise, call a locksmith or remove the lock from the gate and take it to a locksmith shop so they can check it. It's an expensive lock so worthwhile considering repair/maintenance rather than replacement.

The lubricant made it worse. I had to use WD-40 to dilute the lubricant to free the latch. The pin looks bent(?)

I also made a YouTube video showing the latch and pin jamming up. The pin retracts for the first 1/8" then jams when you push it farther in. See the video beginning at the 0:45 mark.

Any idea why the combination stopped working the same time the latch began to jam?

I can see from the picture that the dead latch pin falls in the strike. This condition is hard on the lock, particularly the latch and the clutch. If there is a lot of tension on the latch, it can bend the clutch arm. When this happens, the lock will still work for a while but you can start to notice that something is wrong. In time, it damages the combination chamber and then it quits working because the comb chamber is starting to open as the clutch is starting to slip. The clutch then jams (you can feel it when the knob stops turning, it feels sort of spongy) and the latch only retract about an 1/8" of an inch. I suggest you take your lock to a locksmith before it locks you out. The latching issue must be fixed too. My diagnostic would be: first a new dead latch, then, upon inspection maybe a new clutch, a new combination chamber and possibly a stop plate too. These Unicans are indeed expensive and well worth fixing. All the parts are available singularly or as a sub-assembly like the clutch. It is easy however to run the bill up to $250.00 with labour and parts. Some people will choose to buy a whole new lock and keep the old one for parts. Unfortunately, it seems that it is always the same parts that need replacing and the old lock is not often useful for parts.
