Welcome to the forum. Are there any locksmith shops near you? You might ask for a job helping around the shop. That could evolve into some ride a longs. I find that hands on is a beneficial side of technical learning. Not to mention the input from people around you.

I am not familiar with New York laws, so I can't help you there. You might also do a topic search on "locksmith schools"on this site to see if there are any comments regarding particular schools (Pro and Con)

Good luck.

Tomcat, a member here runs a locksmith school out of NJ ( I think) and can most likely answer your questions concerning Licensing in the NY area.
There are some free classes, and lots of information here:

Lockandload914,

I am in Westchester often and you are across the river from me if you need any assistance. There are a variety of FREE classes you can also enjoy at Accredited Lock supply located in Secaucus, NJ. You can also attend monthly meetings there with the North Jersey Master Locksmiths Assoc. (NJMLA)

For video training, you can visit PELCO located in Orangeburg. They provide FREE CCTV classes. I believe you might also find some opportunities in Elmsford with ADI, and in Mahwah NJ with Eastern Distributing. All within your travel area.

There is a lot of work available for those who want to work and your area is prime.

Penn Foster is good, and even Foley Belsaw contrary to what others may say. Most of these programs are similar since they are teaching the core essential elements at the foundation of the craft.

Good Luck!
