Contour cuts on HPC Blitz

Postby minifhncc » 15 Apr 2013 8:57

Hi all,

I've tried searching on here, but I haven't been able to find whether it is possible to "contour cut" keys on the HPC Blitz. I don't really want to try if it's not recommended amid concerns of damaging the cutter etc.

It would be useful for wafer lock keys.

Thanks

Huh?

You Make your first cut, for example a 3, you move the depth shallower if the next cut is shallower, for example a 1, then move the spacing needle while maintaining a 1 depth. If the cut following the 3 was deeper, say a 5, then you maintain a 3 cut and move your spacing to the next cut then move your depth to a 5.

Not sure why you would need to go backwards, but based on the cutter type I don't see why you can't go in the reverse direction.

See p 76. It says: "Do NOT move back clockwise!"

I see. Well, again I have to ask why you would need to go back? I can see no need to do so.

I guess I normally wouldn't. But I was just double checking. Now I know for sure to not go backwards, whereas if I didn't know then I may've done so and damaged the cutter...

There are some cutter blades that are made to cut both directions. However, still a good idea to only cut forwards.

Probably not on subject, but here is my experience -

On a Framon 2, if I have the "same cut" - say 2 of 3 next to each other, I will slew back and forth as I make the keys. I make ALL our keys on the Framon, so they are all originals, and work like glass. Cutting back and forth with a "9045" cutter makes no difference, and looks "factory" especially with desk and file cabinet keys.

To do so on this machine, you need to hold the key in the cut position and turn the right hand wheel as you hold the cut to slew thru the cuts.

It works, doesn't affect the cutter, and as far as I am concerned, works.

As far as "contour" or "Laser" cut, most of the computer machines can and will do this without problems. I have seen many laser cut keys being used. Blows minds in hardware stores. You select either "plunge" cut like we normally do, or "laser" cut like the newer car keys.

"Laser" cut

Laser cuts?
Does that cut keys with lasers? :)
(I already imagine myself putting in the key and then when sartting the laser I would murmur stuff to the key like: "Well we meet again, Mr. Bond." and "This laser will brighten you day 007"... :D )

Seriously that sounds a very cool very expensive way to cut keys. Never knew they had laser key cutters too.
(Or is it some special cutting pattern?)

As for cutting in both directions: We do that sometimes when the key is worn to ensure the new key is the exact copy of the already worn one. But I think it's bad for the cutting key so we only use it if we foresee a problem.

Going both directions with a cutter that is angled in both directions is no problem whatsoever. Many of our duplicating machines cut both directions. Perhaps HPC is worried about some calibration problem or wear on something that may be affected by reversing direction, but the cutters themselves are fine with it.

Laser cut keys are not cut by a laser, but with a vertical milling machine.  they are called 'laser cut' because they look almost as if they were cut by a laser,  Theylook like this:

Sidewinder cut keys are cut with the same kind of machine, and look like this:

Thank you Gordon I wasn't familiar with the name "laser cut".
I was kinda hoping that there was a laser key cutter :D

So is this sidewinder cut right:

@Gordon: Have you picked that Lexus?

@ARF-GEF: I to wasn't familiar with the sidewinder name. Knew the keys, but not the name. But I believe that's a sidewinder too.
Go ahead, keep plugging away, picking on me! You will end up on bypass or with rigor mortise.
